Fathers and Daughters on Valentine’s Day

I don’t often post events to my blog unless there is a point or teachable moment to be shared. This is one of them.

I’m blessed to have a beautiful six year old daughter. She’s into typical girlie stuff like Barbie and Disney princesses. And thankfully she still thinks dad is a cool dude. I don’t take this part for granted because I know her teenaged version will realize how uncool I really am. So I try to take advantage of the time we can spend together today.

I also view this time as a down payment of sorts. Girls that grow up without a strong father figure often seek a replacement later in life. I don’t think I need to go into the potential unpleasant consequences of this. I also see a lot of busy corporate go-getters in the burbs that simply don’t spend much time with their kids/daughters. It all scares me.

That’s why I’m excited to talk about some of the upcoming Daddy/Daughter events for Valentine’s Day. If you have a daughter, please by all means have a date with her this year. If you have a good time then make it a yearly event. She’ll remember it for a long time and hopefully will have an idea of how a gentleman should treat her.

Alpharetta Father/Daughter Valentine Dance

This is a yearly event put on by the Alpharetta Parks and Recreation Department. This year it will be Friday February 11th, 7:00 to 9:00 at the Alpharetta Community Center. If you want to make reservations, you’d better hurry! The event features dancing and desserts to sample. My wife, Robyn Guy, is the photographer at this event. Daddies and Daughters will pose for a portrait so dress to impress! Trust me guys, your wife will enjoy having this. I know I’m biased, but I think this is worth the price of admission all by itself.

If you can’t make the Alpharetta dance, check your daughter’s school or even church. It doesn’t have to be expensive, just dress up and make it fancy!

Girls dig the ballet. Get over your fear of men in tights!

I’m always disappointed when I don’t see father’s taking daughters to ballets like the Nutcracker. Sure, it’s a Christmas event but there are others to consider throughout the year. Keep an eye on the Atlanta Ballet’s schedule for appropriate events. Next weekend they will perform Sleeping Beauty.

Don’t want to drop a ton of money? Take your daughter to the Chic-Fil-A Daddy Daughter Date Night. You’ve got to make reservations for this event, but the restaurants do it up fancy. Otherwise just dress up, buy some flowers and do her favorite restaurant. There’s nothing wrong with McDonalds in a suit and tie.
