Every Friday, Roots in Alpharetta features an article on food and dining in a series I like to call Foodie Friday.
Easy come, easy go. Here’s this month’s list of new joints and places that didn’t make the cut.
New – Smokejack on Post Road
This is the second location of the downtown Alpharetta boutique barbecue joint. They are in a new development WAY up Post Road. I’m talking past the Vickery development. If you live up this way, enjoy! Otherwise not worth the drive.
Closed – Frontera on Windward
Kinda surprised these guys didn’t make it. Competitive space I guess. But their location near AT&T should have brought them enough foot traffic at lunch. I guess not.
New – 52 Bistro in Alpharetta
Well, not open yet. This is the rumored name of a new restaurant to occupy the old Slice Cafe on Main Street. I know next to nothing about them, other than that they have applied for a liquor license. Cute space though.
Closed – Hangry’s near Avenue Forsyth
Second time this place has closed. I predicted that some of the Peachtree Parkway burger joints would be folding. Didn’t think it would happen this soon. Who’s next to close? Red Robin?
New – Cheeky Taqueria at Avenue Forsyth
Fancified taco shack at the Avenue across from Barnes and Noble. This is the second location of a chain started in Suwanee.
Closed – Chip’s Southern Cooking on Old Milton
I wasn’t impressed with this place. But we need more country cooking places. Kinda sad to see them go.
Closed – Teriyaki Express on Main St and Windward
Not a surprise.

52 Bistro in Alpharetta to occupy the old Slice Cafe on Main Street:
Good luck but this location, while cute and cozy, is unfortunately doomed. The rent must be really low.
Closing soon: Coffee Pot in Alpharetta (or is it Milton?)
They’ll be closed in 6 months. The menu is a list of ingredients. Make the effort to suggest a few house specialties! If I want to make make my own sandwich, I’ll go to Kroger and slap together my lunch.
I was very much underwhelmed with Coffee Pot. While I wish we had more alternatives to Starbucks, this place isn’t what I had in mind. I agree, they will probably be gone soon.
The 52 Main Street address is a tough one. It isn’t visible from the road and is easy to miss. But you never know. The tree loft dining is a cool concept.
Agreed on more alternatives to Starbucks. I refuse to use “Grande” to refer to something small. Unless I’m talking about… never mind.
Hi Lee, this is a great blog – my first visit. I’m curious…where do you get your info for this category? Just living here or from another source?
Thank Ryan and welcome. A lot of it is just driving around and paying attention to the restaurants. I eat out way too much! Some of it comes from reading other blogs, review sites, forums, friends, etc.
Lee – what is your favorite breakfast joint in Alpharetta?
Hi Rhonda. I’ve thought about making breakfast a Friday topic. But the truth is that I don’t eat out for breakfast much. I’ve tried some of the higher end options like Red Hen and J Christophers and I’m not super impressed. I guess for the money, I expect a lot more. After all, breakfast should be a cheap meal to make, right?
I’d rather spend 2 or 3 bucks for a good bagel (BB’s) or a Dutch Monkey doughnut. Now there’s a good breakfast!
Lee, I’m bound and determined to turn you onto my side. Agreed though, if a quick and easy breakfast is what you want, then it should be cheap. But if fresh, made from scratch and a little inventive and different from the rest is what you are after…you may have to pay a little more. We have recently added quicker “to go” items to our menu and muffins, etc. to appeal to the on the go crowd.
